Dubai is taking significant steps to create more sustainable and livable residential areas with its new Super Block project. The initiative is part of the city’s larger vision for a greener, more environmentally friendly future. The main goal of this project is to turn certain neighborhoods into car-free zones, putting more focus on pedestrians and cyclists. This will help improve the quality of life by promoting green spaces and making neighborhoods more enjoyable for social interactions and outdoor activities.
The areas that will benefit from the Super Block project include Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone. These neighborhoods will be transformed into pedestrian-friendly zones where people can walk, cycle, and enjoy public spaces. The changes are expected to increase green spaces, improve air quality, and make the neighborhoods more vibrant and interactive. By prioritizing walking and cycling, Dubai hopes to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle for its residents.
The Super Block project is being led by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. This initiative is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, a long-term project that aims to improve the city’s infrastructure and make it more sustainable. The plan includes creating more green spaces, improving public transportation, and reducing carbon emissions. The Super Block project fits perfectly into this larger plan, aiming to make Dubai a greener, more livable city for its residents and visitors.
In addition to the Super Block project, Dubai is also working on other exciting projects to improve the quality of life for its residents. One of these is the development of the world’s tallest well-being resort, which will be located at Zabeel Park. This new resort, called “Therme Dubai,” will be a major addition to the city and is expected to open in 2028. The resort will feature an interactive park and the world’s largest indoor botanical garden. The park will be designed to host 1.7 million visitors every year, offering a unique space for relaxation, wellness, and fun.
Dubai is also planning to build a 6,500-kilometer network of modern walkways across 160 areas in the city. This project, known as the Dubai Walk master plan, will make it easier and safer for people to walk around the city, whether for work, leisure, or exercise. The walkways will help reduce the reliance on cars, contributing to a decrease in carbon emissions and promoting a healthier lifestyle. The plan includes constructing 3,300 kilometers of new pathways and improving 2,300 existing ones by 2040. In addition, more than 900 kilometers of walkways are expected to be built after 2040.
The walkways will not only offer a more scenic and enjoyable way to explore the city but will also help create a more connected and pedestrian-friendly urban environment. By encouraging walking, Dubai hopes to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and provide residents and visitors with a better overall experience of the city.
In terms of environmental efforts, Dubai has made significant strides in 2024. The city planted 216,500 trees last year, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. This is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to greening its urban spaces and improving air quality. The planting of trees has also contributed to the expansion of Dubai’s green spaces, which grew by 391.5 hectares in 2024, a 57% increase from 2023. These efforts are part of the broader goal of creating a more sustainable and greener city for the future.
Additionally, the Dubai Municipality planted 5.3 million seedlings of flowers and ornamental plants in 2024 and replaced 45 million seasonal flowers throughout the year. These efforts help enhance the city’s beauty and make it a more pleasant place to live and visit. The continuous planting of trees and flowers contributes to the overall health of the city’s environment, making Dubai a more sustainable urban space.
Through these initiatives, Dubai is setting a global example of how cities can improve their sustainability, livability, and quality of life for residents. By focusing on green spaces, reducing carbon emissions, and encouraging active forms of transportation, Dubai is working toward a future that is not only more environmentally friendly but also more enjoyable for its people. These projects reflect the city’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, and they play a key role in fulfilling the aspirations of Dubai’s residents and future generations.
